Drive Shaft Snap Ring

Best Answer kiwimike01 , 25 May 2020 - 07:42 PM

I have solved this issue. Turns out I did install the cv on the wrong end so have since pulled it off and put it on the other end and it then went straight into the pot joint and locked in place. Shorter splines into the cv and longer ones into the pot joint. Go to the full post

Hey guys I'm in the process of putting the driveshaft assembly back together and I'm pushing the driveshaft into the pot joint and it goes in fine but I'm not sure if it's far enough because the snap ring doesn't engage and I can pull it back out easily. Is this normal or is there something I should be aware of? Pretty sure I've assembled the shaft properly as only one end wanted to fit into the CV joint.

The inner end will go in until it bottoms out on the shoulder. Which at the same time the C clip should engage. Are you inserting it fully?

yea pushed in fully and even given it a tap with a hammer. ive also put my finger in to see if the pot joint is hard against the collar on the shaft. have tried 3 different snap rings with the same result

Are the splines at each end of the drive shaft the same size and somehow I have put it together back to front? Or is it impossible to do this?

Is it a new or old pot joint?

CV end has a stop ring. Pot joint does not have a stop ring. The shaft has a shoulder. IIRC the splines are the same but I have never tried fitting the wrong way around.

Ok I'm starting to think that I may have installed the CV on the wrong end. I'm trying to find an exploded diagram of how it goes together but can't seem to. I took it all apart and left it for a week without thinking to take photos

Assuming the problem is only the snap ring, make sure the gap is at 6 o clock.

Sometimes a new snap ring will do the trick

Good luck
