Yesterday I decided to remove the engine for inspection, clean and rebuild.

Attached File  X-Flow Front.jpg   107.21K   29 downloadsAttached File  X-Flow Rear.jpg   85.12K   25 downloads

When built I had everything balanced. I’m changing from a grey to orange pressure plate. Should I have it rebalanced?

The engine is producing 112 lbft torque @ 6000rpm and 102 lbft @ 3000rpm, 132 BHP, 3.1 diff and has straight cut drops. I know the turbo boys are producing more power and using helical drops, but how likely would I end up winding the idler gear into the casing if I went helical? I don’t want to risk ruining the gearbox casing but the noise of straight cuts is wearing.

Thanks,

Is it a 711m engine?? Good for 120bhp on twin 40's back in the day on a 1700 bore. Great engine to work on.

Thanks, I did do a little write up post #30 http://www.theminifo...w-enigne/page-2 some years back.

I built it many years ago before digital cameras were common place so never took any photos of the build. Now I have it out I'm taking loads.

Apart from the pressure plate change I plan to machine the center cap to take a bronze thrust washer so it'll stand up better to the mini clutch pressure, which is also part of he reason I want to change to an orange pressure plate.

it's 1700cc 711M.

Great to work on in an escort but very tight in the mini:)

I think you'll be fine with helical drops, as long as you can use the later a+ ones, but if you are concerned about killing your special casing, maybe look into getting the helical idler converted to timkin?

Many thanks for the link, I remember now and have posted links to your post and photos on the Technical Section of the Mk1 forum in a Mini-Ford thread as now rare retro Mini-Ford engine conversions are always of great interest to members. I have done a couple of rebuilds on these engines, one in a bog stock MK2 Escort and a pre 711m in a mates TVR. Basic engine but tuneable as hell. And in a mini it would be tight to work on. Still love it though.

Mab01uk, Thank you, I did see it posted on the MK1 forum.

Just looking back at the receipts it was built with Jack Knight drops with roller conversion. Whether than means I'm stuck with straihgt cuts I don't know? It's been a long time since I did it and forgotten most of it.

I know Mike Spider did a bearing mod to helical drops but never seen anyone else offering such a mod. Do you know someone who does it?

I would love to get rid of the SC drops but not if it will risk damaging the casing. I do have a spare but don't really want to go down that route.

I was hoping that in the last 20 years someone would have developed a better option.

Sonikk4, before the mini I had the 711m in a Vauxhaul Chevette. I still have all the bits to do the conversion.

I do like the Ford kent engines. As you say easy to work on and tune.

I would stick with what you have as the axel and “hat” in the transfer case are (or the current MED ones are) a very tight fit.

so I am not sure what the condition of the bores would be after removal.

Thanks Nick,

The axel is definately fixed well.

I assume by 'hat' you mean this part? It's not fixed in the transfer case but is a good slide fit into it. Should it be fixed (by loctite retainer or something) into the case?

What about balancing if i change the pressure plate?

Talk to John Guess about your drops and bearings.
