What's the best way to remove an inertia bendix from a starter motor?

I've only ever successfully removed and refit with the correct clamp tool....there's surprising amount of tension that needs containing...

I've done it before by using two large pairs of vise-grips (mole-grips?). Clamped the spring with a pair of the grips on each side. Got it just tight enough where I could remove the round wire clip on the end.

I did this in the end to an old vice I had laying about
