What Bracket Have I Got Wrong Here?

You should have a squared "U" shape bracket on top of the mount - with a one arm holed at the top and the opposite side with a captive but in it....(takes a 4" or so bolt to mount the rad)

 

Quick edit er ! - Looks like you have an early engine in which case right bracket - wrong way round!!...assuming using the ealry 2 piece rad cowling...

You need the cooper S bracket that is shaped to clear the damper, you also need the matching rad cowling. I bought both from minispares, they needed quite a bit of work to make them fit.

It’s the old style 2 piece cowling .. I think it’s the minispares one I need, the one I have must be for the narrower pully

Yes that's the bracket, I had to make it more 'Z' shaped to try to reduce the height of the bracket. If you look at the lower cowlings on minispares you'll find they do one for 850/998 without a damper and one for the cooper S with damper.

Yes the one I have is clearly without damper...
