In the United States, particularly in NYS, taking defensive driving courses can qualify you for discounts and a cheaper car insurance policy for a full three years or even points reductions for traffici tickets/violations as part of the NYS DMV's Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program (IPIRP). The NYS program is described here: https://dmv.ny.gov/pirp/online (Oddly, these States do not offer a discount: Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Vermont)

Anyway... The reason for this post is that I just was given a ~25% off coupon code for the American Safety Council's on-line New York Defensive Driving course that is normally $24.95 (so you save $6 and pay just $18.95) and wanted to share the savings. But more than the upfront $6 savings, if you are not taking advantage of this program, I strongly recommend you check with your Insurance Company to find out if taking the on-line course can garner you an insurance cost discount, because in my case, it will provide me a savings of $92 per year for 3 full years before I need to take the 6 hour course again ($46 every 6 months - see picture below).
