Bit of an odd question, but I've been tidying my engine bay, and have removed the master cylinders etc.

When I've gone to refit it all, I've noticed one of the pipes from minispares doesn't reach between the master cylinder and the compensator valve.

When the car was last on the road, the Pipes were as follows:

Top left of compensator to bottom of master cylinder
Top right of compensator to top of master cylinder

I then checked on my 1988 red hot, also with a front/rear split brake system, and noticed the pipes are the opposite way around:

Top left of compensator valve to top of master cylinder
Top right of compensator to bottom of master cylinder

Somewhat confused, I then checked my 1982 pickup, with a split diagonal system. This is set up as follows:

Top left of compensator valve to bottom of master cylinder
Top right of compensator valve to top of master cylinder.

I've never swapped any of these pipes around. So I'm somewhat confused as to the difference between the 86 and 88 minis that both have a front to rear split system. Does it matter as to what way around the pipework goes?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Alex

It will also depend on what Master Cylinders these cars had originally.

The earlier cars with Tandem Cylinders had the GMC167 type (Black or Green Band) Cylinder and from these, the Front Circuit was run from the lower port.

A few years later when the changed to the GMC227 (Yellow Tag)  Cylinder, the Fronts are plumbed up to the top port.

Somewhat confused, I then checked my 1982 pickup, with a split diagonal system. This is set up as follows:

Top left of compensator valve to bottom of master cylinder
Top right of compensator valve to top of master cylinder.

Surely this isn't original ? I can't see any way of running a Compensator on a Diagonal System. None of the cars came from the factory this way.

I got somewhat confused, I have the earlier type front-rear split on my 82 pickup, with the earlier type master cylinder. I've since read up, and my 86 Mayfair had always had the brake pipes the wrong way around. I've had the car 19 years and it's always been that way around, so must have been changed a long time ago!

Thanks for your advice!

Alex
