You are trying to fit an alternator where there used to be a dynamo?

Do the mounting holes on the block match the bracket that now holds the alternator in place?

Can you confirm they are a direct swap or have you changed something?

Post a picture of the bottom mount please.

in your picture of the brackets, the smaller one is used with a dynamo on the A series block or an alternator on an A+ block - I’ve always referred to this as the A+ bracket although technically it fits both blocks.

The larger bracket is only used to fit and alternator to an A series block

Have a read you just need to use the new alternator bracket for the a series block.

I dare say it is largely redundant.

Exactly what I'm thinking.

The alternator holds in place well enough on the 2 right-side mounts.  But I want to be thorough and get that 3rd mounting point solid.

Ive tried running just two front mounts on a light weight alternator and the waterpump casting broke there the alt bolts on... muy setup wasnt even as loaded as a std setup as it runs a toothed belt so theres little belt tension. I think the vibration did for it.

Thanks for the caution!! I'll keep the 3D printed driving to a minimum

Correct- I'm putting the alternator exactly in the dynamo's old place.

The alternator holes match perfectly as well.  It's this part: https://www.7ent.com...ket-lra100.html

And the mounting bracket is: https://www.7ent.com...es-12g1053.html

Thanks, yeah, this is the guide that Jack from 7ent.com pointed me to as well.

i am wondering if you are not aware that the mounting on the alternator for this bracket is a sliding fit.

fit bracket.

fit alternator and tighten the water pump bolt to get the sliding mount to adjust. or tighten rear bolts to get the slider to move.

bin plastic unneeded bit.

That belt looks too short - it’s normally 813mm for a 998

Because it’s short all the adjustment mechanism looks to be fouling, especially the bottom bolt through the alt that is far too long (and has no spring washer).

As Nick says build it up with the proper parts, start with the water pump fixing, then the rear fixing (to see if the sleeve needs to move in the alt) and then the lower one. Once everything is nipped you can then tension the belt.

You really are trying to solve a problem that you shouldn’t have, and in the long term will prove itself with a slipping belt or worse.

The metal bracket fits my engine casing just fine, but the mounting hole for the alternator is about a half inch too low.  Unfortunately, the holes weren't even made the right size. I had to take a Dremel to carve out the last millimeter to fit the screws through.

And @GraemeCI think you're right.  The tensioning arm  has a good 2 inches. left in it, so I'll order a 813mm belt.  Thanks for that

Thanks again, GraemeC.

I put the new belt on tonight.  The old one was an inch shorter.  You've got eagle eyes

And has that helped the proper alternator bracket fit?

It didn't, but it's made it so I don't struggle getting the belt over the alternator pulley

A very deIayed update because I was sure worried about messing things up.  And I was hoping to get access to my neighborhood welding shop, but here in California, we're still in lockdown.

I can't tell you guys how surprised I am... The 3D printed part works!  :highfive:

A couple of surprises:

* The engine doesn't heat it up at all -- it's cool to the touch.

* it's perfectly rigid, no shaking at all (I think a little bit of this is due to coating it in an epoxy resin)

3D printed parts in a 62 Mini.  Who'd have thought!?
