I'm new to the forum and I would be truly grateful if some could point me in the direction of what to do next...

I own an '96 SPI mini (blue star edition)

The problem:

When the engine is cold and I turn the key - the engine cranks with no signs of starting.

It will start if

a) I add easystart

b) I remove all the spark plugs , turn the engine for a second, put back the sparkplugs.

No problem driving around after starting and the car starts without a problem when warm.

There is spark, the engine gets fuel, the pump primes, the voltage is ok.

I have

1) Checked the vacuum lines

2) Cleaned basic ground contacts

2) Checked valve clearances

3) Changed to new spark plugs and capped correctly

4) Changed the crank shaft sensor

5) Changed the coil

Currently waiting for a new coolant temp sensor.

....Please help....

UPDATE:

Changed the CTS - starts like normal now.

Big Thanks for the help!

When my coolant temperature sensor went faulty I had problem on starting engine, once the sensor was changed, starting back to normal.

It does sound like an overfuelling (flooding) problem.

Try this, press accelerator pedal all way down to floor before starting, crank engine. If it fires or tries to, it sounds like CTS is faulty, but it should start from cold.

Obviously, once its started, return pedal back to idle position.

Following advice on this forum, I have the rover MEMS app for my phone (android) and the cable to connect to the Spi ECU.
The cable came off a seller on EBay for about £20, the app is free (basic).

Well worth it in my opinion. You can see what sensors are goosed, trim your idle speed, see what's going on in real time and much more.
I highly recommend for any Spi owner. Gone are the days of diagnostic equipment costing hundreds of pounds (in my opinion)

Yes I agree, not mini related but I use the Torque (Lite) app ... it bluetooths to an ODBII dongle and it works really well.. 3 quid for the Pro app and about 12 for the dongle

Mini is pre OBD and is a 3 pin round connector, I'm unsure if its possible to convert to obd2
