Hi Everyone,

My good friend and teacher in anything Mini gearbox or engine related has come by a 5-speed box of unknown origin. Since he is age wise well into the high-risk group I unfortunately can't have a look on the box and parts but this is what he sent me.

What gearbox do we have here and where can we get more information (and spare parts) from?

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks and stay safe ..

Very interesting find, but I've never heard of a Tranx 5 speed mini box.
Tranx was bought out by Quaife some years ago and they don't mention a 5 speed box.
I think 3J drivelines was formed by some of the old Tranx employees so they may be able to supply some info.
Might be worth posting on the Mk1 Forum as there are members there with a lot of knowledge of 'odd stuff'

Here is a little on the history of the Tran-X Mini 5 speed gearbox. It implies that Mini Spares was the only seller of the Tran-X gearbox, but I have the impression these (or least some type of 5 speed) gearbox was sold by Tran-X independent of Mini Spares.

The last 'works' Mini's buit by BMH back in 1996 had 6-speed Tran-X gearboxes. There is a photo of the Tran-X end cover in the book 'The Last Works Minis' which looks very similar to your photo.
It says that only 2 of these gearboxes had been located.
The cars were built by Enterprise Garage and Racing,Oldbury, Birmingham.
Could be a very rare item he has there.

Hi Everyone,

I finally had the change to see the gearbox (parts) in the flesh on Sunday.

The gearbox is kaput (as we say in German) with to gears stripped, the middle web of the ox broken and some damage on bearings. Nonetheless it's basically the laygear which we need to replace with all other parts (seemingly) being standard 4-speed parts and the housing being an machined standard housing.

This is what the laygear an shaft look like:

Does anyone know if the special layshaft is still available (new or used) and if so, where?

Any hints are highly appreciated.

As mentioned above, Quaife bought out Trans-X, they were a victim of the GFC (remember that ?), and at the time of the take over, Quaife did say they would continue to provide parts and technical back-up for the Trans-X range.

Drop them an email

https://www.quaife.c...contact-quaife/

They are fairly good gearboxes, but as they use a few standard gears internally, they to tend to strip teeth on high powered engines when driven quite hard. While they seem to take the Power (Torque) OK, they don't cope so well with Power and Impact loading at the same time.

Here is a photo taken at the Minispares stand at the 1991 Autosport Show at the NEC. Asking about the gearbox the Minispares salesman said that it had been produced by Tran-X and was still in development and would cost in the region of £500 when it was finished. It is different in the "fifth speed" area compared to the November 1991 article mentioned above.
