This sounds like a very simple problem, but I’m a bit stumped...

Mk1 with 998cc engine. I’m in the process of cleaning the cooling system after some time in storage. Dynamo and water pump out, but the fan belt can’t get past the crankshaft pulley. There must only be a couple of mm space between that and the engine mount bracket. Any suggestions? I’ve never had to remove the engine to replace a fan belt before!

just loosen engine mount / stabilisers and jack the engine up asif you were changing the clutch with the engine in , except the fan side of the engine

Thanks - although by loosening the LH engine mount I think the bracket will still be in the same place?

Looking into this some more - I have a 998 Cooper engine in a Mk1 that didn't originally have it (I still have the orginal in various boxes). I assume the engine mount bracket is original - which differs from the Cooper one that I believe is similar to the later brackets. Presumably this allows the required sapce around the larger pulley

Wonder if anyone else has done this swap and whether a newer-style bracket is an alternative to attach to the engine?

Will the bracket come off?File a radius to enable the belt to come around the pulley.I would possibly cast an eye over the brake pipe whilst you are in there.Steve..

Isn't it possible to loosen the bracket to provide enough clearance?

It looks, in the photograph, like it's bolted on.

It looks like you have the crank pulley with the larger damper as fitted to the Cooper 'S'.

You need to remove the bracket by undoing the mounting bolts through the sub-frame, then jacking the engine up a bit. Rompve the bracket and file it to give just sufficient clearance for a fan belt to be fitted or removed. You won't need to take much of, maybe 1/8" just on the bottom of the bracket.
