The starter relay is on the rhs bulkhead triangular strengthen thingy(possibly).See if it clicks, try reseating it.Good luck,Steve.. Go to the full post

Hi, it's been such a long time since I've had to do any work on a Mini that I just can't remember what does what or where!

Got a '94 Sprite, converted back to a 998cc pre-SPi engine.

Turned the key, engine was trying to fire. Gave it a rest, turned the key again and here was nothing there at all.

Minis I had in the past had a separate started solenoid, so you could hear it clicking (or not), and I would have just changed this by default as a first point of repair.

Seems to be that this is now incorporated in the starter motor … can anyone advise how to check this, and give a few hints if it is repairable. Is there any other fuse inline before this that might otherwise be the cause of the problem?

(headlights are NOT dimming when turning the key, so there's no load on the system, simply nothing to turn the starter motor)

many thanks in advance!

Change the starter relay, if still no joy make sure there is power to the red/white wire during cranking.

sonscar & cal844 … thanks both for your comments. Replacement relays arrived in the post this morning and the engine fired up first time! (#GotToLearnCarElectronicsAgain!)
