Differential Tight?

Best Answer neet street , 20 June 2020 - 08:08 AM

Hi and thank you, the new fibre thrust washers were OK, the issue was the new pinion dished thrust washers. the old ones were OK, but as I had new ones decieded to replace, put old ones back in, and problem solved. the thickness was the same, but guess that they were not formed correctly.

thanks again all

John

Hi All

I have put the diff back together, and when turning the diff (not in the gearbox) its quite tight? new bushes reamed out as they should be, new washers ect. I have only tightened up the main bolts (the ones with the three double  tab washers) lightly with a socket and ratchet, and when I try to turn the spindles, they hit tight spots? I am now concerned that if I tighten right up, they may be REALY tight and cause an issue, especially when getting hot. any ideas or thoughts that you can offer would be a great help

thank you

John

Have you got the correct thickness shims fitted, there are 2 thicknesses. was the bushes bored out concentrically to the diff and the crown wheel or were they reamed out?

I hanvt got to the stage to put the shims on yet, just put the ass together and not on the greatbox. all parts were taken to a very good engine specialist, so the bushes should be central. But that would not explain the tight spots I dont think would it?

Thank you for your reply

sorry meant the thrust washers >_<, If the bushes were machined off centre then it could cause an output shaft to bind up more?

This may also shed some light;-

" Genuine Rover fibre type are now 48 thou thick which is so tight it will probably lock your diff up, they used to originally be .035 thou. These are 43 thou oversize type for worn units but the correct size of 35 thou is available as BTA101."

Just to dispute that a little, the originals were in fact Brass and these were 0.039" thick, then they went to these (rubbish) fibre types and they were 0.035" thick as above.

Hi

Have you fitted new planet gear thrust washers (the dished brass/bronze ones), if so i would check these. Mine were causing the planets gears to bind up as they were thicker than the original ones. I ended up bedding them in with valve grinding paste.

Thank you all, this seems like a couple of possible issues to look at. I did replace the fibre washers and the brass/bronze dished washers. I have all the old ones so can check them out tomorrow.

thank you all for your help, will keep you up-dated for any future visitors with the same problem.

Yes - thinking back (it was 2 years ago) it was the profile not quite right & the diff was very tight.

As I said I lapped them in with grinding paste & they eventually started to free up.

I still haven't fitted my rebuilt gearbox yet due to other projects, but i'm thinking of stripping it again to change to a 3.44 diff. I must be mad!!

Good luck with the rest of the build.

Alan
