Hi all,

Currently restoring a 1992 SPI and have a question regarding the Radius Arm.

When removing and taking everything apart the castle nut on the stub axle was near impossible to get off.. I had to get a friend (I don’t have all the tools) to help and after trying lots of different methods, angle grind it off.. during that process the threads on the stub got messed up which is unfortunate but not the end of the world as I see you can buy them for around €20.. my question is how do you go about removing the stub? I have looked online and it seems to just slide into the radius arm and I have tried a hammer (on the larger side) and nothing is budging.. any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

you'll need someone with a press to get them out and the new one in...

I am pretty sure you have to get these pressed out with a hydraulic press. They go in easy enough, but getting them out is another commodity altogether.

Problem is as well, there is not a lot of meat around the stub axle, and using a press could fracture the arm altogether. I used to refurbish radius arms (long pin and bushes) only, and someone asked me once if I would replace the stub axles as well as the pins and bushes,  and in all honesty, I would not touch that end of them.

That looks like the rear passenger side radius arm which is unfortunate as I do have a rebuilt arm, but for the rear drivers side, typical isn't it !

You did realise it was a left had thread?

yes they can be pressed out and pressed back in. Get a new retaining washer as well. And make sure you get the correct stub as they have different threads.

you will need a 10ton press MINIMUM and a suitable sleeve to press it back in. They press out to the rear (inside) .

Thank you for the replies!

On another inspection.. I think the threads are actually not too bad.. when I eventually angle grinded off that side I tried the opposite side nut to see if the threads were workable or not.. obviously it’s a different direction thread on the nut so of course it wouldn’t fit.. Perhaps il get the correct castle nut for that side first and see how it goes.. it would be much cheaper (and easier) to just have to replace the nut!
