"In a written response to the Independent Garage Association, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said the extension is constantly under review, but will remain in place until a safe way for conducting MOT's can be found. Shapps also said that the government needs to work out a way to ensure there is ‘sufficient capacity’ when tests are reintroduced."

How many testers does it require to carry out an MOT? I thought only one? small garages need this income -I think the Gov just can't be bothered to think about it so find it easier to extend. Does mean I can spend the cost of replacing the cracked windscreen on my daily on the Mini!

You need the tester and an assistant to operate all the controls in the vehicle unless you have a one man test setup that uses automatic shaker plates.

From 1 August MOT testing will again become mandatory
"Lockdown restrictions are easing, and all drivers with an MOT due from 1 August are being urged to book an MOT test. This is a legal requirement.
Drivers who have an MOT test due before 1 August will still be granted the 6-month extension. For example, if your MOT is due on 31 July, it’ll be extended to 31 January 2021. But even if your vehicle is exempt, you should take it to the garage immediately if you notice something wrong. You can still be prosecuted for driving an unsafe vehicle."
