Around a week ago, I went to start my car (1984 Mayfair with electronic ignition) and it wouldn't start - just a click (so dead battery or faulty starter motor I thought).
I charged the battery and tried again - this time it turned over but didn't fire up (so not starter or battery anymore).
I'll run you through a list of things I've done since:
- checked for a spark on the spark plugs (spark plugs grounded to engine block) - no spark
- checked for fuel going into engine - fuel going in
- attached spark plug to king lead and grounded to body - no spark
- checked voltage across (+) on ignition coil and ground (ignition on) - 12V
- checked voltage across (-) on ignition coil and ground (ignition on) - 10V
- checked continuity between distributor body and ground - good connection
- replaced ignition coil with spare
- checked resistance between primary and ht output - ~10kohm
- cleaned dizzy cap and all connections
- rewired the ignition coil circuit, bypassing all existing wires from fuse box/ignition key to the coil, and the (-) wire to the dizzy, except those inside the dizzy
- checked the king lead resistance - ~5k ohm
- checked for spark between raw king lead and ground - no spark
- checked connections inside dizzy - solid connections
- checked firing order - correct
- checked HT leads from dizzy to plugs - solid connections, working wires
- checked spacing on plugs - alright
I still get no spark from the ignition coil no matter what I do.
Am I missing something really obvious? I probably am! Why am I not getting a spark?
As far as I'm aware, I've checked everything except the internal wiring in the dizzy (ie from (-) on ignition coil through the dizzy).
