Hi all,

Thanks for adding me to the forum.

Quick intro ... What can I say ...?

Desk bound wannabe grease monkey that has big ideas without enough time on my hands complete ... :(

I use to love working on cars when you could see what each bit did and a hammer was the go too tool of choice in any situation. More recently, as the cars have advanced, I've had to put my tools away and make do with getting fleeced by the garages.

A few years back, the wife suggested I look at building a kit car, and after much research, I went for something called a Freestyle Kit Car, for those that remember, it's a Classic Mini based, rear wheel driven roll cage on wheels.

The donor for the project was ideal in that she was 30k miles but was riddled through with tin rot. So the project began and over the year, I had got the point where the engine was installed, wiring completed and hydraulics wet. Then things ground to a halt - work, kids, money, etc.

Kit was mothballed for 12 years (I know) when last year, we decided to roll her out and restart again.

Since then, we got the engine turning over and replaced a list of components including radiator, alternator, coil, starter motor, replaced the resistive wire (which caught fire!) and refurb'd the SU carb.

And this is where the story again grinds to a halt ...

See follow up post in technical discussion area for my latest challenge .....

Welcome - I would really like a Freestyle (but not sure I could persuade SWMBO) and I always keep looking on Ebay just in case

As with a lot of things I couldn't afford one when they were more easily available and now they don't come up too often and those that do are often unregistered field cars so the SVA/IVA thing puts me off if they aren't registered (is yours?) - 580 quid now I believe?

Hi Mini Mad,

Thxs for the welcome.

I know the Freestyle was pretty rare even when it was available and now that Dave has closed shop, they are getting more scarce.

IVA approved units are still around and can be picked up in various states of disrepair, which is unfortunate as they are loads of fun.

The plan is to go for the SVA, hang the expense as I want to take her to shows and possible do longer runs into europe with some of the club meets that happen there.

One step at a time though ...
