Hi,

I am building a 1310 from a Metro 1275 A+. I have cleaned up the oil pipes and was going to send them off for plating, however one of them is quite badly pitted.

I had a look at buying replacements but I see they are no longer made and have been replaced by braided versions at about £60 each!!!

It might proved more convenient to fit an Oil Cooler instead? However now that the engine is completely stripped I cannot work out which oil pipes I would need or how an Oil Cooler would get plumbed in.

So, if I were to replace all of the oil pipes which ones would I need.

How would I plumb in an Oil Cooler

Any recommended oil pipes and or cooler.

Thanks

pointless cold oil is worse for the engine than hot oil.

60 quid you are looking at the wrong place,

I had exactly the same issue with heavily corroded original pipe and picked up a good second hand one off Ebay for not a lot of money. The other problem with an oil cooler if your engine doesn't really need one is they take up valuable under bonnet space (mainly the pipe work), as they should really be used in conjunction with an oil thermostat.

Unless you're doing rallying or racing/hillclimbing don't put a cooler on. Not needed and your oil will struggle to get up to working temperature under road driving conditions.

Looks like I won't be fitting an Oil Cooler then :-)

I am going to send the Oil Pipes off for plating and see how they come back.

One concern in doing this is plating on the inside coming off into the oil?

In the mean time I'll price up some braided pipes.

John's are well priced but I still need to adaptors.

For my engine, which is a 12H, I believe I need a 5/8 to -08AN for the block and a 1/4NPT to -08AN for the filter housing.

The need for an oil cooler comes when a sump guard is fitted for rallying or rough-road use.

The aluminium sump is an excellent heat-sink for the engine oil so long as there is sufficient air flowing past it.

OK so the idea of an Oil Cooler is well and truly sacked off but I am still having trouble finding a decently priced braided hose replacement with the correct adaptors?

These are the bits I used when I made mine, the bottom 2 links might not be correct for your engine and oil filter housing (mines a '92 block and a DSN filter housing). Was pretty simple to make.

Hmm - you made your own - how do you fit the ends on and seal them up?

I do like their silver braid and blue / red connectors?

Edit

Looking at this, it looks the same as a plumbing compression fitting with an olive :-) I can do that.

Do they need pressure testing once made?

Have a look at this video or search AN hose assembly.

Simple - looks like I'll be making my own then - I take it the 6AN is large enough diameter for the Oil Transfer Pipe. John Guess's ones are 8AN? Not sure what size the Mini Spares ones are?

Just priced it all up for £35.75 :-)

Only difference is I picked the blue / red hose ends and blue adaptors as it fits my colour scheme.

Also from what I have looked at the thread in the Pre 92 blocks require a 5/8" threaded adaptor, the only 5/8 adaptors are 5/8 x 18UNF not 20UNF, does that mean the thread that goes into the block will be 2mm less? Is this an issue?

Do I also need a copper washer for the block adaptor.

The 18 and the 20 are the number of threads per inch (tpi), not the length of the fitting.

5/8x18UNF is the standard size.

So doe a pre 92 Block a 5/8 x 18 UNF adaptor should be the correct one?
