Thanks again - looks like the Odyssey will be the one to go for then as I should be able to mount it on the inner wing being appreciably lighter than an 038 and not too pricey at 97 quid (from the link kindly provided by Steeley)

I was just looking at the numbers but if we're sure it works then I'm prepared to give it a go. I think they look like 6 or 8mm terminal screws

Just read the project thread from REVVIT and this uses an Odyssey PC545 which is smaller than the PC680

Having re-read the Odyssey info they say that the PHCA figure of an Odyssey can be compared to the CCA figure of a standard battery so either of these compare OK to a 038 and both are much lighter (my main need issue for mounting in the front)

The PC545 is smaller/lighter than the PC680 so would be even more handy for my purposes

You can buy 6mm to SAE post converters to simplify things if needed

I think that a specific charger is needed for these so that jacks up the cost a bit though. (I expect I will need one at some point.... :gimme: )

Just for info in case anyone else is going round the same loop

I'd fit a bigger capacity than an 038... I use an 063 size battery. I know its not ideal but it will be worth considering as additional capacity means you can use the starter motor to get the car out of a difficult situation if the need arises.

The odessey batteries are great but you do need a specific charger for them.

I know some of the above isnt what was asked for but just my 2pence worth

I spoke directly to the supplier and they say a specific charger is NOT needed for an Odyssey as it is still a lead acid battery.

I think a specific charger is needed for gel batteries or those with fibre mat (is that right) rather than proper lead plates; also lithium ion if you happen to be using one of those but they are really pricey (but of course much lighter so you get what you pay for)

Gone for the PC680 and think I can mount to the front panel behind the grille as it is pretty well reinforced on the kit car not a single thin skin like a standard metal car

Could someone please tell me what's the largest battery you can fit in the boot battery box, or the physical internal dimensions of battery box well?

Thanks in advance.

Our old friend the METRO has a bolt in battery tray and could be well suited to your idea. Plenty of them about and designed to take a mini sized battery.

Ideally you want something like an 063 size battery, I find the standard mini size battery to be a little low on the length of time you can crank the engine for before it runs out of charge.

Battery was up front under the bonnet on the first prototype Minis in 1958.....

And you know why they moved it to the rear. Better weight distribution to help the rear braking.

Hi All - thinking for my project car to put the battery under the bonnet (clubman front end) as being fibreglass, to put it in the standard under backseat location would mean having to run two high power cables to the front subframe (do-able but would be neater if I could get the battery under the bonnet)

Run the cables. You will need to run cables any way.

mount some earthing points where needed along it.

I think I can fit a standard mini size (038?) at the front over the starter motor as I've deleted the fresh air scoop/snorkel (purposely for this idea) and possibly mounting off the inner wing but I haven't worked out exactly how just yet - considering some kind of bracketry off the clutch housing as an alternative

Anyone ever done it?

Any reason not to do this?

Any ideas how to mount it?

Is there a smaller/lighter battery I could use - its not an everyday car but I wouldn't want it to be any less convenient/usable than if I was using a standard L/A battery

Thinking of doing the same, moving my battery from the boot to the engine bay, not worried about fabricating a battery tray, just want some recommendations about best and ideally smallest in dimensions battery that i could use. Am using a 630 Varta at the moment and would like a smaller battery but with the same electrical power. Read up on batteries and it all goes crazy with codes for size codes for starting power codes for charging rates................etc etc. getting confused with 630 pc38 pc545 and so on, is there somewhere that explains the generic physical size, output and cranking amp all in one table.....cheers
