Wow. I wonder if the engine can be salvaged. Will probably just end up as paperwork for a ringer.

They didn't make 997 in 67. Think they stopped in 63.

Dodgy logbook swap coming soon!

I noticed it had a 90 MPH speedo which makes me think it might be a standard MK1 with a 997 engine fitted.  You have to be a bit careful as its not unheard of for a car to be listed as a Cooper of Cooper S on the logbook but to actually just be a standard MK1 chassis number, back in the early days of the DVLC you could ask them to change the description of the car and they would so people fitted a Cooper or S engine and had the car description changed.

I've seen a couple like this over the years and it could give someone a nasty shock when they find out!

I can confirm that, I fitted a 1275 Cooper S engine, discs and most other parts to a standard Mini back in the 1970's and DVLA changed logbook description to Cooper S at same time.

It's a 1275cc engine and nothing very special looking, certainly not an S motor.

You did used to be able to change the vehicle model within a type.

I bought a 1962 Cooper from a young guy who worked for a BMC Main Dealer in 1968. He had fitted a 1275 'S' engine but the logbook had the original 997 engine number. The guy gave me the receipt for the 'S' engine. I fitted 'S' 7.5" brakes, did a rally prep and notified the DVLA (or whatever they were called back then) and they changed the description to Austin Cooper 'S' with the engine size listed as 1275 cc and the correct 1275 engine number. I wonder what happened to it. Someone had a 1962 Austin Cooper 'S' 1275, which could not really exist.

How things have changed.
