A rolling road tune does make the world of difference. On my old Mayfair which I'd fitted with a +30" 1275GT block, the initial power run gave 68BHP, and I thought it was running well. Turns out it was lean, the timing wasn't quite right either and the throttle cable was slightly slack. An hour's fiddling by someone who knew what they're doing and suddenly I have gained 11 BHP. And that's a LOT when you start with less than 70. The difference really was like night and day. My friend's Mini went from 60 to 76 BHP thanks to Peter Baldwin's genius.

It's an expensive outlay but it's WORTH it.

Thanks for all of the advice, much appreciated.

I’ll give maniflow a phone on Monday.

And thanks for the rolling road advice. Being in Scotland, I’m not sure I have that many options to chose from! From what you’ve all said, the car will still run well enough for me to drive about after tuning myself, and I can take it to a rolling road when I want it to run better.

So i ended up buying this maniflow one: https://www.maniflow...61&product=1387

I phoned them and they don't supply the needles anymore, as people were complaining that they wouldn't run perfect etc.

Which needle would folk recommend? I have HIF44 carb, since it's a 1275 cooper 1990. Maniflow suggested the BBW?

thanks

Ah sorry - I hadn't realised they'd stopped supplying the needle, it does seem to be a hotly debated topic, so I guess it makes sense to leave that to owners to decide on! I'll try and double check which needle I got from them, but I'm pretty sure it was either a BBW or a BDL. When the kit was first put on the car, with just a basic tune to pass MOT emissions, there was a noticeable improvement in engine performance from the stock exhaust (with cat), although it did initially 'bog down' slightly in the 2000-2500rpm rev range - especially in 2nd and 3rd gear. A session on the rolling road with Stuart at VMax (https://www.vmaxscar...ng-road-tuning/) sorted out the flat spots and it drove very smoothly across the rev range afterwards.

It's been off the road for 5 years since tho - bodywork overhaul - so it'll be well overdue another session once I can get it back on the road! :)
