Hi

Replacing torn steering gaiters.

Is this correct oil? Halfords Gear Oil EPS80W90.

https://www.halfords...-1l-724443.html

Best way to top up and what volume?

Through new gaiter or filler in passenger footwell?

Thanks

Kaz

Early or late car? As most now use grease. But if you want to put oil in then it is right. And you add it at each end.

That Oil will be fine, 200 ml. Use an Oil Can and fill from the Driver's end, though, don't try and get it all in in one go ! Jacking up the driver's side as high as you can will also help.

Is oil superior to grease? If grease is already (later model 1990) in there will adding oil be an issue?

Many thanks for replies.

I used to overhaul racks for many of the Mini Parts suppliers in Australia. Without question, all the racks I pulled down that were filled with Oil from the factory were in much better condition internally than those that had Grease. Unipart themselves admitted they changed to Grease so they wouldn't leak Oil, particularly while on the shelf and that is a possible down side to using Oil, that it can leak.

All the racks I did were always filled with Oil. The one in my wife's Moke has done over 300 000 km, with only the a couple of sets of Gaiters being changed in all that time..
