Had to look at my son’s Clio today under braking the steering wheel shakes quite a bit I have ruled out the discs and pads as these where replaced only 5 months ago with a brembo disc and pads and after further inspection today I can’t fault them . I also checked the callipers all sliders and pistons moving freely .
My gut is telling me the problem lays elsewhere? With the car jacked up wheels rotate free with no binding also no play in the bearings when holding the wheel and moving top to bottom and side to side . Used a lever bar under the wheel an inch off the ground and no uplifting felt .
No coil spring damage and I visual look at the wishbone rubbers look ok I have held and moved With a bar and by hand all other suspension parts and I can’t find anything untoward .
No wheel shake under any other condition only when braking?
Any ideas am I missing something any other tests I should be doing .

If you have no play anywhere, bushes, bearing etc then it has to be the discs. All because they are a quality brand does not prevent them from warping under high usage. 

 

You can check them out with a DTI for run out but i would put my money there to be honest.

Hi thanks for the reply I don’t have a dti gauge but checked the gap between the disc and a point on the  calliper  apx 1mm or 2mm then rotated the disc to see if any warping couldn’t see any movement in th disc .

I could set up a fixed pointer that touches the disc then rotate to check?

 

ps just updated first post disc’s and pads brembo only fitted 5 months ago

You'll need to do something like that. Not being disparaging about your son as i don't know how he drives the car, however i have known good quality discs to warp due to excessive braking after some spirited driving (talking from experience here)

 

Have you had the pads out and checked them for damage, not unknown for even new ones to have a fault. Also you can check them to see if they are glazed.

 

Is there a forum for the Clio?? might be worth seeing if there is one and they may be able to throw some light on any peculiarities for this car.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply no offence taken it had crossed my mind with ref to his driving I did explain about bedding them in when I fitted them but it may have fallen  on deaf ears . I must admit the Clio is so heavily over braked I remember reading about this is reviews when I purchased the car so as you say this my have not have done it any favours .

The pads looked fine no uneven wear / cracks or over glazed  and the discs still looked like new.

I will definitely take your advice and check for warping tomorrow

I'd suspect warped discs. The manufacturers runout limit is normally 0.1mm, you're unlikely to see that without a dial gauge.

The rain stopped this evening so I got a chance to check the discs for run out with the dti gauge and the results are not good one disc in a full rotation went from 0 to +0.04 then back to 0 the other disc went from 0 to + 0.02 to -0.03 then back to 0 .
So new disc and pads then .

Well hopefully thats the root cause.  It goes to show that even good quality does not mean they will be ok.

I seem to remember seeing Ed China use a machine that re-faced discs on the car - might be worth looking into as this takes other issues into consideration such as the mating face of the hub.

What a coincidence I was just watching an old wheeler dealers and this episode was on a Porsche Boxster S and as you said he re-faced the disc on the car with a £5000 machine cool bit of kit and interesting to watch but you can’t hire them and Ed said a garage would charge around £160 ( must be a +10 year old program) it was worth  doing as the discs on the Porsche  cost over £600 per set! 

My sons Clio new disc’s and pads £65 and as stated in my earlier post all sorted now :)
