I have an 89 Mini Mayfair with a vauxhall corsa electric steering colomn i have a modified 1293 lump in it and having an interesting problem
Today reversing out of the MOT station ( car passed as well) the steering locked straight. I rocked the steering and it unlocked but this locking issued happened with the key in the ignition a bit scary any ideas

I'd say you'd be wise to remove the lock assembly from the column to see what's happening.

Some use springs to retract the lock and if this is one of those, the spring might be weak or the mech gumming or rusting up.

It may only retract a small amount to just clear the inner column and if the bushes are wearing, it might be just catching.

It's a serious safety hazard, and I would suggest not driving it until you resolve it.
