Hi, new topic for the restoration of my Mini, this time on the mechanics.

I have always thought my tank had a small shape for being the 7,5 gallons version.

Now I could get a 7,5 spare, and putting them side-by-side I realized it's the 5,5 gallons which was built in my car (it's the paint stripped one).

However, mine has had a diagonal strap mounted in the car, which as far as I know did not exist on the small tank. It definitely looks as an original feature as the shape for the strap is very neat.

Is that an exotic version? Or an evolution from the old to the new one?

My car has been first registered in april 1979. Beleiving Minispares the change to the bigger tank happened in 1980.

Cheers

Gilles

My 5.5 gal tank i have sitting in the garage has the diagonal strap cutout as well. The fact yours is fitted that way could have been done by a previous owner.

What is the fitting on the boot floor. Is it a physical bracket or captive nut welded into the floor??

I think the last of the cars fitted with a 5.5 gallon tank had the diagonal strap. Don't know when they changed and I can't remember when the 5.5 gallon tank was phased out.
My friends 1980 clubman has a 5.5 gallon tank with diagonal strap.

I believe it's original as the car has the fixing for the diagonal strap and not the physical bracket near the wheel.

Thanks to point it out, I didn't think about it ;)

So that means the diagonal strap on my car is also specific to it as the tank is narrower.

Very good to know!

Thanks all
