Why ?

Oils for most modern cars don't need any of the special additives to protect the engine and gearbox with shared oil like a classic Mini does.
Oils for classic Minis needs to lubricate both engine and gearbox parts giving the necessary coating and protection.

Those additives have nothing to do with being synthetic or not.
It's the fact that our baulk rings in the gearbox dont cope with the synethic that's the problem.

Synthetic oil is a really bad idea for a Mini due to the shared gearbox oil.

I have heard good things about Miller's specific Mini oils, but my first choice is always Valvoline VR1 20w50.

Its an oil specially developed for Minis A series engine and gearbox, you wont go far wrong with Millers. I use their modern oil in my daily driver Landrover as well and very happy with it too.
