I have a 998 I have almost finished rebuilding

It’s a std setup at the moment but just thinking for the future

Is there any major benefit to running a twin carb set up if so hs2 or hs4?

If its standard just fit a single hs4, it'll be easier to tune and get running well.
In regards to twin carbs what you gain top end you lose in low end. Throttle response may be slightly better though.

Certainly use no more than twin HS2 on a 998.

Benefits - possibly better throttle response, but not much else other than looks and pub points.  Obviously more expensive to put in (refurb costs are double for instance) and will need to be set up well.

For a road car and weekend play toy, a single HS4 or HIF38 would be the sensible choice

Maybe I’ll stick with the hs4 that’s on it

I just like the look of the twins

Then go with twins. You're not running an old mini for practical reasons ;)

I'd spend the money on an RC40 exhaust and a slightly lighter flywheel - transformed my 998 on a single HS4. Having said that I do like the look of twins!

Go for it and fit the HS2s they are better low down than a single carb. And they’re cool. Once set up they run ok and if they’re in good condition don’t go out if tune. I’m a twin carb fan as you can tell.

I don't think there's any contest in the looks department!

I’m in Bournemouth anyone know anyone near me who would set them up properly

They do work well low down and give better throttle response than a single. That’s why BMC fitted them in the first place on the 997 Cooper instead of a H4/HS4 single.

Not sure about Bournemouth but Stephen Miles of Tipton Garage in Ottery St Mary are a good bet for set up and rolling road prep. So set them up as per the instructions on Burlen website. Then get the car to Titpons. If your engine isn’t yet in I’d seriously consider changing the cam at this point. The head can be done later whilst the engine is in the car but the cam is far more tricky once in.

It's quite expensive to re-furb a set of twins - especially if they need re-bushing. The kit of jets, spindles and gaskets is is @ £80 and I think a re-bush was £60 per carb when I looked into it (Burlen). Add to this the cost of having the alloy parts vapour blasted and other parts re-plated and it all adds up.

Looking around for a set, lots of different types - aud69 ,aud327 etc listing for mini and mg etc what would be the best type to buy for a std 998
