As a Commercial Pilot, I was subject to annual full proficiency checks (LPC) and six-monthly operating efficiency checks (OPC).

I think that a driving simulator check would be a major advantage.

Hazard awareness, road sense and positional awareness could be assessed relatively easily.

As an example: the ability to drive through a 2 metre width barrier without coming to a halt/ proceeding at a snail's pace would show whether a "driver" has the necessary talent to be in charge of a Motor Vehicle.

Emergency braking and skid awareness/control could be tested at the same time.

If the government were really serious about road casualty/death reduction, this would be a much better way to do it.

The trouble with these 'autonomous' vehicles, lane assist etc. At the moment (even in the teslas) you still have to be in the drivers seat, alert, hands on the wheel ready to take over if needed... If this is the case, why not just drive the car.
IF and its a big IF. Every vehicle was autonomous and we could work, sleep in the vehicle whilst it transports you around in relative safety great... Oh hang on thats a train.

I think we should all enjoy the pleasure of driving whilst we can, it might no be a pleasure much longer.
