As a Commercial Pilot, I was subject to annual full proficiency checks (LPC) and six-monthly operating efficiency checks (OPC).
I think that a driving simulator check would be a major advantage.
Hazard awareness, road sense and positional awareness could be assessed relatively easily.
As an example: the ability to drive through a 2 metre width barrier without coming to a halt/ proceeding at a snail's pace would show whether a "driver" has the necessary talent to be in charge of a Motor Vehicle.
Emergency braking and skid awareness/control could be tested at the same time.
If the government were really serious about road casualty/death reduction, this would be a much better way to do it.
