Has anyone every attempted to fit a fuel injection pump inside the original tank. I have a new tank and thought it would be easier if I can install a pump like an mpi pump inside the tank and obviously modify the top of the tank to bolt it down than it would find somewhere for the swirl pot and extra pump to feed the pot.

Don't see why that would not work. Have a look round the scrap yards for something OEM that fits a similar sized tank.

I am looking at exactly the same thing. Check out matt green 16v on you tube. He is currently building a pick up and 2 today's posted about putting an mpi pump into the tank.
I am more likely to fit a swirl pot and an inline pump as I have the parts. It's an interesting conundrum

The other thing to look at is the Holley hydramat with internal pump if you feel flush

This is what we did for our Traveller:
I like the Hydramat idea, if it can be made to work.
I could never work out a good place for a swirl pot
