[Minigman]

I was replacing the water jacket plugs today On my pre A+ 998 block and one was so loose it wouldn’t stay in. It measured 1.624” which is just 1 thou under the official size.

Any suggestions how to get over this?

They are a Lens type Plug in these and as supplied, they usually are undersize. When fitted and massaged for sealing, they expand and will actually go a long way beyond the 'official' size.

 

I carefully clean these and the register they are fitted in to, then put a small bead of loctite (243 or any other medium strength type) around the register when fitting to help with sealing.

No. Neither did I imply that. If they're so small they fall through after properly trying to fit them it's a manufacturing defect.

When you say massages do you mean whacked with a hammer? I Did try that and used Star Wellseal on it as with the other 3 but no joy. Any help would be appreciated.

No. Neither did I imply that. If they're so small they fall through after properly trying to fit them it's a manufacturing defect.

They can’t fall though. They fit in a recess. 3 fitted fine and one didn’t hence the question. Moke Spider has come up with a good response to my problem and has identified they do appear undersized at first. Just waiting to find out what massaged means exactly.

This is a little long winded, I'm sorry, but of all the zillions on youtube, this guy actually knows what he's doing;-

 

They ideally need to end up flat or flat for about 1/2 of the centre (if that makes sense). Sorry, but just whacking them in the centre with a hammer usually doesn't expand them, well it does as it goes flat, but then as it goes past the point of being flat, they shrink again.

They are inexpensive to buy. Get yourself a few spares and try different methods on the bench, measure them before you start and then after, you'll soon find a technique that works for you.

Thanks for that Chris. I’ve just ordered another set and will whip
out the ones I’ve done already as the sealant has no doubt gone off too well to start whacking them all again and expect leak free.

Well, it falls out is what you said.
Again, you say you fitted a few and only one gives a problem, so I assumed you know how to fit them. Then it can( could) only be a manufacturing defect in said plug.
