Hi, I need to get my 1971 Mini into a mechanic to diagnose and solve a persistent cutting out problem. Can anyone suggest a suitable contact in Leicester/Leicestershire?

Thanks

Marc

Odds on you can solve it yourself. What happens exactly?

Does it stop abruptly?

Does it matter if you are accelerating, on overrun...?

Is it difficult to start?

I picked the Mini up on Monday and it kept cutting out on the way back. It was ok for the first 50 minutes of the journey home, no trouble at all. Then the power just went, no revs. I coasted to a stop, gave it 10 mins and tried to start it - no problem starting at all, so set off again. Same thing happened about 5 miles later, then 1 mile later and then 100 yards later. Same thing everytime...just instantly lost all revs. After the 4th or 5th time I called recovery and got a ride home.

At this point I thought it was due to something getting too hot, as the first 50 minutes where trouble free.

However, nipped out yesterday, 10 minute drive - all ok. Left the car for 30 mins and then started the 10 min drive back home. Cut out almost immediately. Coasted to a stop. It started back up straight away. 1 minute later the same thing happened, this time when it happened I changed down in to 3rd, which had the effect of jump starting it. Then this happened another 4 or 5 times.

So now I'm not so sure it has got anything to do with something getting too hot.....considering the short drive. Any ideas??

Ignition works by switching itself off & on to make a plug spark every time it's off - that makes it very vulnerable to anything that disrupts the circuit even for the briefest time.

Anyway - I found your other topic, so we can have a team effort there

If you're going to be a Mini owner, being able to do this stuff is as useful as being able to change gear  :D

Had one brand new faulty plug that caused an intermittent problem similar to as you describe.

Plugs are cheap so get a brand new set and swap them out.
