3 times in a week due to a worn primary gear (where the oil seal sits) then the roll pin on the gear selector wouldn't go in as the shaft had rotated somehow.

Yes you can do these items in place BUT my dad likes space to work lol

I've had mine out a few times. Between me and a mate, we lifted out my bulletproof 998 with a scaffold pole and a ratchet strap to swap it with an untested 1275 off ebay, which shortly blew up. I took this out and had it rebuilt by KAD (not the gearbox) before dropping it back in. Then one of the gearbox bearings died, so out it came again. I've just dropped it back in again for hopefully the last time after having Specialist Components turn it into an absolute monster for me.

Once you've got the routine, techniques and the right gear it's surprisingly quick.

Only once in the current mini to change a gearbox.

Whilst I had it out I stripped it and put in new clutch, oil pump, timing chain, water pump, valve stem oil seals etc and painted it all in lovely BMC green.

It suffers from serious oil leaks however so it really needs that rectified which will mean another engine out job but a plastic drip tray under it in the garage woks for now and it doesnt get that much use for it to be a big problem.

Got the car in 2001, had a new clutch fitted shortly after. Never been disturbed since, the little 998 is still going strong! I think the 'factory' oil leak has saved the front subframe - clever design!

New clutch time is coming again soon though.

In my car - twice in 25 years  - once for a new gearbox after I hit a mid road pedestrian island in the dark that had lost it's lights and rogered the sump, and the second time to retire the 998 and put in the big lump...did a front subframe swap at the same time as unsurprisingly it was a little bent.....

In my friend's car (the bane of my existence as he's allergic to spending money to fix things properly) .......annually......last time due to an "ebay reconditioned gearbox with no paperwork"  -  my car leak / drippage  free.....that one dumps what seems like a litre on the drive every time it's here!!!

Got to the point of being able to take the mini from driving into the garage 40 minutes later driving out again...

Needless to say... a fair few....
