I’m currently replacing all the crusty rubber pipes with some lovely silicone ones and thought since I’ve got everything drained I might as well take the heater matrix out and give it a look over / refurb.

Does anyone have any advice on things I might miss or the process in general ?

Fit a replacement matrix, test the fan on both speeds(where fitted) then you'll also want to fit new foam in the necessary areas.

They come apart easy enough. I cleaned mine out until it ran clear water. It wont be as efficient as a new one but so long as water can get past Im quite happy for now.

If I remember correctly there are two different length screws. Put them back in the wrong place and the flap no longer moves.

Any tips on how to cure buzzing from the heater box?

The buzzing in my heater was caused by the flap actuation mechanism on the back of the flap. It's a long time ago now, but I seem to recall that playing with this and eliminating any free play in the links stopped the noise.

If I remember rightly the flap hinges are little metal rods sitting in holes in the casings. Next time I take my heater out I've been thinking I'll use rubber grommets or nylon tophat liners to eliminate rattling here.

  • You could de-scale the matrix with some citric-acid (coffee machine de-scaler).
  • Ensure you replace the foam strips on the flaps  (if later - i.e. post Mk2 - heaters had them I don't know).
  • Lubricate the motor bearings with some sewing machine oil or similar.
