I've not had a change to cold start it since. 1/2 term here so not venturing out with the kids. As soon as I get a chance I will report back.

Have you tried looking under the hood in the dark to see if your shorting anywhere?

Do you have access to a gunson colour tune? It can be very helpful to see whats going on in the chamber.

When cranking quickly let the key flick back from  the start position to ignition on, see if it fires up then, seen lots that have that issue, mine included, which indicates there is no feed to the coil when cranking or very little voltage put a volt meter on the coil + and earth get someone to crank it over and report back on the voltage. your looking for 11v +

The later cars had a direct 12v feed off the starter solenoid when cranking to aid coil voltage and aid spark from the coil, seeing as you,ve changed your ignition hows your coil wired ?

The above is far more problematic  when cold

That Coil is for "points". Using a 123ignition dizzy on 4 cylinder engines, for standard street engines is advised: the “Bosch Blue", “Beru ZS106” or Pertronix 40511 from USA (maybe the best).

Too rich is a real possibility. Ive found when pulling choke fully on, my 88 with HSU4 takes lots of cranking. So much so I am beginning to think it floods and wont fire until I've push choke off partly or fully and opened throttle. Still trying to learn what it wants when ambient is under 10 C.
