Hi all, I am recomissioning a 95 SPi Cooper for a friend that has been off the road battery disconnected for 14 years. I've been trying to work out why it has no spark. It has power at the coil when the ignition is on but still no spark.

I've just realised they have a factory immobiliser and alarm. I've changed the battery in the fob and in line with the instructions in the book, pressed the dimpled button four times to connect to the car but nothing happens.

Would the reason I have no spark be anything to do with the immobiliser? If it was would there still be power at the coil?

I'm only used to older mini's so this is baffling me and I wish I hadn't offered to help!

Thanks in advance

Does the fuel pump activate and the engine crank when you turn the key? Is it just no spark?

Hi, yes I can hear the fuel pump and it does crank, just appears that there is no spark.

With the immobilizer activated, my Spi will not even turn over.
Assuming mine is operating as standard, I'd say it sounds like the problem isn't the immobilizer. At least not that it is activated.

Remove the upper lid of the air cleaner housing. See if there is any fuel coming out of the injector while cranking. If there is no fuel, there is no signal from the crank position sensor to the ECM. If there is fuel, either the coil is bad or the electrical path from the ECM to the coil ground connection is not good.

Since it has been sitting around for so long you will have to deal with other issues too, so have a look at this thread:

And this will keep you busy too:

Good luck!
