I have a newly built engine by Ian at Avonbar. I am running twin HS4s on it. The engine is 1330 and should reasonably quick (for a mini). Before I put the engine back in, would I need to replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electrical type. Will there be enough fuel from the SU pump?  If not, what would people recommend?

The mechanical pump should suffice, someone will be along soon to give more sound information, if you feel that you need an electric pump use a low noise facet pump set to 3psi.

I will suggest you wire in a low oil pressure cut off to the fuel pump live feed for safety.

A standard FACET pump, the block-shaped one, the SS501 will be fine. I run such a pump on my Cooper 'S' and it is OK when flat out on narrow twisty roads and is then giving about 12 mpg. I have a pressure reducer just before the carbs (twin H4's). In fact I have a pair of those pumps plumbed in parallel, but that is just for reliability on rallies, not because one pump is insufficient.

That pump needs to be mounted at the rear. I have mine bolted inside the rear sub-frame on the laft with the bolts going through the horizontal rear seat panel. I never bother with the rubber mounts, but then I am not bothered by the pumps ticking noise.

It's for safety, so if the engine loses pressure (brings the light on) the fuel pump is cut

No reason to fit an electric pump here. I wouldnt want to faff around with wiring, relais, inertia switch ( mandatory for safety so you dont keep pumping fuel in a crash), drill holes,.. for no advantage.

If you've had a new camshaft does it definitely have the lobe for a mechanical pump?

 

I'm not sure whether all cams available now have the extra lobe but many years ago I got caught out with this after fitting a 510 cam ... definitely some head scratching before i realised what was wrong!
