Been doing quite a bit of work on my Austin mini 1988 1000 city e auto and all electrics were working fine however now no electrics work other than headlights and high beam. I think it occurred after hitting the steering wheel when removing it. No fuses have blown and earths seem to be okay but feel like I’m missing one somewhere and I’m stuck. Any help or suggestions where to look?

Does the car start?

Main relay as you look into the engine bay is located on the left hand side near the large front subframe mounting bolt.

Seen them cause the same problems you describe.

If it starts sounds like a wire on solenoid has come off which feeds the fuses.

Yeah car starts with no problems however now I have just realised the back lights don’t work either. I will have a look at the connections on the solenoid see if something has been disturbed there. Thank you for the reply!

My 88 recently had a spate of eletricky issues appear within a few hours of each other. First, no radio and turn signals, then no starter solenoid click with ign key to start position, then no brake or rear lamps.
Starter relay terminals were de-corroded and starting came back. Checked the four fuses by removing and reinserting. Solved one isse but created another. Took each fuse box connector off a bd found the dreaded green corrosion on some contacts. Hit with rust converter (vinegar works well apparently) and wire brushed. Seems to have resolved all issues.

+1 for checking solenoid - I ripped the dash out of my car a couple of times before I found a broken wire at the solenoid (but it started OK)

The headlights are the only electrical item that isn't fused. Therefore as they work and nothing else does I'd start looking at the fuse box.

Was two things, the connection on the solenoid was a bad connection, cleaned this up then found that power was going through some fuses but not others, found when I pushed the fuses in more it worked so ordered a new fuse holder so it would hold the fuse securely and worked perfect. Now however the left indicator doesn’t flash and just stays on, any ideas what could be causing this? Hazards and right indicator working fine?

As said above bad earth suspected, test if you have a sealey type tester and can provide a new earth, or make up a wire to the bulb holder to a good earth point to test.

Check in the bulb holder inside as they can cause the same issue of a bad earth
