Hi all,

I have just recently bought my first ever Mini, a year 2000 W Reg mini cooper but I have noticed the oil filter sits at the front facing forward, sitting at a 90 degree angle.  It has a cooling pipe ( I think) coming across the front on the oil filter too.

So im just looking for advice about how I change this filter.  Do I need to disconnect the pipe and therefore replace the cooling fluid each time??

last thing is the sump plug a magnetic plug and what oil should I refill with as I have seen a few different answers online so far.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and all the advice, im sure I will be on here asking lots haha

Adam

You do not need to remove cooling pipe, although you may find it helpful removing the front grill. Can’t remember if the sump plug has a magnet on it. Recommended oil is usually 20/50 if it is a manual box.

I remove the Coil Pack to give easier access to the Filter, some may say it is not necessary but, otherwise it can be a faff.

You can replace it by just pulling the pipe out the way.

Remove the coil pack and lift it ontop of the engine.

Wash the spills off the engine once you fit and tighten the oil filter, I just use petrol or brake clean. Remember to smear some fresh oil onto the sealing ring.

Sump plug should have a magnet on the end.

Use 20/50 mineral oil, I use Comma classic but change every 3000 miles. Or use valvoline VR1 which is more expensive but better than the comma stuff.

Hope this helps.

I've never experienced any problems removing the oil filter on my MPi. I drain the sump before I remove it. Unscrew it and slide it out, hole upwards, then drop the new one down, hole upwads, lift into position, then screw on.
