.... what's involved in fitting one?

Looking in the gearbox there doesn't appear to be a lot of space, can the o/e pickup be removed without removing gears/shafts or does the gearbox need stripping?

Need to remove the laygear to get the old strainer out.

The CPUP and laygear are fitted at the same time, in one operation.

Having never dismantled a gearbox (they're mostly just black magic to me) is it fairly straightforward to remove/refit the laygear?

Stu.

Although for what you want to do you don't need to remove the diff casing or disturb the pinion nut which makes things a bit easier.

What I would say though - unless you know your gearbox is A1 then, if you're this far in, it would be wise to strip, inspect and refurb as required, especially baulk rings.

I am sure I managed to get the stock pick up pipe and strainer out with out dismantling anything. But I am going back a few years, but it was a 4 syncro rod change box.

I'd assumed the standard pipe was solidly attached to the strainer, is this not the case?

You cant fit the CPU without removing the lay gear anyway. So whether you can or can not remove the original part is not important. I'd change all bearings while at it too. It's easy enough. There is a video on minimania which is quite good.

When fitting them, as Graeme has mentioned, you need to fit the Center Pick-up Oil Pipe and the Laygear togther.

I usually place the Laygear on top of the Mainshaft, then get the Oil Pipe through the opening in the Case

Then fit the Larger Thrust Washer for the Laygear in place. Holding my tongue the right way, roll the Laygear in to place. I find propping up the Speedo Drive end of the Gearbox is helpful while doing this so the Thrust Washer doesn't fall in to the bottom of the Box, the other way this could be done is to put a lick of grease on the back of the Washer, to help hold it to the Case.
