Say you have a 1275 car for sale at say £5K and the engine expires before sale and you fit a £5K recon engine. Is it then a £10K car?My thoughts are the same for any engine.Steve..

Here are the thoughts of someone who is currently having a similar spec 998 built at the moment.

Firstly the main reason I went 998 is that it came out of the project and with a 1275 car  running already I fancied keeping this one small bore. If I hadn't got an engine, or the one I had was scrap I'd be going 1275.  On the plus side for you there are more and more people choosing to restore their Mini back to 'original' spec at the monent so the market for a 998 may be growing.

Would I spend nearly £3k on an engine from a private seller, probably not.

For a price comparison check out the link; https://www.mccsengi...es-classic-mini

My build, by a reputable Mini engine builder, is a similar spec to yours with a 295 head and the price I've been quoted is less than the mccs sports engine. Obviously I've supplied the engine for refurb.

A couple of things with yours;

1) all the engines for sale online are on an exchange basis, the advertised prices are significantly higher if you don't have an engine to give them, so the ads are not always transparent as far as pricing goes.

2) You're offering all the ancilliaries as well, distributor, coil, inlet, carb. Perhaps the price might look more marketable if you didn't bother with these and just provide what the other engine builders are offering, keeping the price down.

Looks like 998 A plus block +20 re bore - new Hepolite pistons 10.3 high compression - bead blast con rods, new cam bearings, stn crank assembled with new main bearings and big end bearings is the first to go for sale.

Had a quick read of the engines on the site. But looks like they are without gearbox, add the gearbox and the cost is near 4k but standard box, not uprated as i intended. Again the aditional parts carb, exhaust, distributor, coil, all add to the cost.

I think i will refurb all the parts i have and sell them... as individual parts

I have finally decided what to do with this engine... It took many pints of Stella..

I will keep it.. I have a huge amount of Turbo parts that are spares for my previous engine build. In tidying up I realized I have nearly a whole engine. Except block and crank. But I have a 998 block and crank. Im going to assemble all spares for my turbo engine into a 998 turbo.. Keeps all parts safe and tidy. Any problems with the 1310 engine and I will have a complete 998 turbo ready to go.

Best not tell the wife..

Ive built the 1310 to go in first. But being a little crazy why not have 2 engines... hehehe.. This was me trying to clear my garage. I really need to get the garage tidy to do the shell. With no car to put either engine I must get it done

Think alternatively, look at all these you tube peoples who film their builds and get paid for their videos on line..

Also seen people get in touch with local garage/ colleges and use their builds to educate the local youth project to keep people off the streets. Give something back to the community.

Speak to the parts suppliers and see if there is anything they can do on prices if you buy all bits at one go.. make the engine cheaper at the end of the day..

Either way.if you want to do it then do it..

Clearly your motivated to do it over the next 3 months..

Keeps the brain active and in these Covid days mental health is more important than anything..

Do what you think is right for you...

This all started from trying to tidy my garage to make space to do the shell  . My original thought was rather than it just sit there build it. Then realised the true final cost and that most people would not want to pay it. I'm stupid but don't want to end up with a rebuilt engine worth nothing. I have sold many parts already that I don't need eBay... Kept all the original turbo parts, realized I've got a complete 998 re-bored with new pistons, gearbox, 12g940 head, turbo, manifolds and plenum. So rather than go silly with it I will rebuild all the parts making a 998 turbo.

I'm having major surgery beginning of Dec and cant do any heavy work. Will be at home on the sick. Physically wont be able to do the shell as its major panel replacement. But the engine and components will be lighter and easier. I will not be able to do nothing for 3 months... I must also keep clear of covid
