Sorry for the VERY simple and stupid question.

I have been reconditioning the clutch master cylinder.

I have noticed there ISN'T a seal in the cap. Should there be?

It seams odd to me that there wouldn't be a seal and I fear i may have lost it during cleaning.

IF there is one is it an 'O' ring type or flat rubber/fiber type.

Thanks

Chris

They are also open to the atmosphere to allow for venting.

I was tired of the cap on my clutch master cylinder seeping fluid so I made a cork gasket and RTV’d it into the inner groove of the cap-no more seepage. It’s possible to over tighten it and crack the threaded portion of the cap and cause leaks. Don’t ask me how I know.

That just sounds like it was far too full!

If it didn't let air in there'd come a point when it couldn't let fluid out in to the cylinder. In the extreme it could even try to operate the clutch, or at least stop it from returning fully so the release bearing is in permanent action.
