probaly a silly question, but whats the easiest way of replacing these ?
do you have to jack the car up and remove the whole gear selector mechanism or can you access them through the hole in the floor ?
thanks

No need to remove the whole assembly, make it accessible from the inside, Tie the assembly up, undo the nuts on the inside, jack the car up, undo the other nuts on the bobbins, fit new ones. It's made easier with an extra pair of hands so you can tighten the nuts up on the inside while the bobbins are held with grips.

Gear bobbins? What are they?

gear bobbins now installed, can reverse up the drive again- but still drops out of second if going down hill and no foot on the gas ! Is the steady rod adjustable- wondering if this could be the problem- anyone any ideas ?

If the bobbins have gone maybe the rubber in your steady rods has gone as well causing excess rocking of the engine?

I would say that is more likely to be the synchro that is worn not holding it in gear.
but check engine mounts and stabiliser bushes first. The bush at the back of the diff rarely fails but check it for play as well.
