I'm certain that if there was a better solution, someone would have come up with it already, but is there an easier way of measuring caster without having to mess about with turning the wheels 20deg one way, 20 deg the other way etc etc?

For example, can anyone tell me if the distances A+B below are identical?

And if so, can I then assume that the straight edge on my caliper (highlighted in red) is a good indication of caster?

And this may be a completely ludicrous question due to presumably a host of variables, but has anyone ever figured out a rough guide for setting camber on a jacked up car which gives the equivalent camber when the car is back on the floor with the suspension settled? I'm sure if someone had AutoCAD and the inclination/time to do it, it could be worked out based on given front ride height.

Feel free to laugh...

this is not a stupid idea...

the only problem would be to measure the angle of the brake caliper with the wheels on as youd want to measure it on the ground completely sprung :/

regarding the measurement of camber with the car jacked, I dont think it would be possible as each mini sits differently high and wear of components would affect everything...

Lets think of a way to measure the caliper angle with a wheel on. that would be a good start!

p.s. get the app "protractor". easiest way to measure angles on wheels for camber etc. would be perfect for the caliper angle+phones edge

There are such systems available but they can be expensive

I have made a Castor Gauge that works in a similar way, but fits on to Sockets that are fitted over the Ball Joint Nuts. I did look at using the Caliper Bolt Holes as you are thinking, but between the Hubs I measured, there was too much variation for my liking. This Gauges works OK on a Moke as it has open wheel arches. I have it in mind to extend the Arms and put a wiggle in the top one, so that it's easy to use on a Mini.
