if i wanted to paint my rusty coloured manifold, do i need an preperation, or will the paint go straight on, and what paint/spray do i need?
Also, any special normal colour for it?

I take it you mean Exhaust manifold mate.
Use either engine enamel or Hight temp paint, The surface your painting ideally needs to be degreased, rust free and dry. with no crumbly bits or gunge on etc etc.
You can get this kind of paint form Halfrauds, or you local motorworld/motor factors.
If you're removing the manifold to do this.....
Get rid of rust etc with a wire wheel drill attatchment, Wipe down with plenty of white spirit to degrease, let it dry, then paint it, don't just slap the paint on, build it up with 3-4 light coats.
**edit** Oh and the colours are usually either black or silver.

Hammerite Barbeque paint does wonders, gives a nice matt black finish and sticks well. I got it from Halfrauds.
