Hey everyone! Finally got round to working on my mini. Is the metro discs the best way to upgrade from my existing four drums? Has anyone any opinions on the super fin drums?

Hey Turkey Tycoon, I just bought a disc conversion kit from Mini Spares. Just started setting up the hub today and will be taking off the front drums to change out very soon. So far so good so you can also give them a call for some advice.
by the way does anyone one have any hints for replacing the brake hose on the passenger side? Driver's side looks okay because the engine bay (wing inner panel) has a cutout to access the radiator but the passenger side has no cut out. I might have to bend the engine bay side out a little access it with a swivel arm and bend it back in place. I don't like to bend metal unless I have to... Ideas?

ive got some metro 4 pot vented brakes, they've been modded by the previous owner to fit under 10's. i cant get in touch with him my question is will i still need to buy metro drive flanges now they have been modded. also will they fit under any 10's if not which ones? if anyone can help cheers, im finding it hard to get hold of the guy who sold me them as hes not been on in a while so cant get the answers i need and relise he may be the only guy who can answer if he modded them.

i bought a complete set of metro turbo brakes and hubs and im going putting them under 13s. i know that i have to change the steering bit for the one of my standard hubs. im not sure a bout the driveshafts will the metro ones fit in the mini cv joints? or do i neeed to change them?
im also going to put on new discs and pads does anyone have advice on this.

My advice would be to use Mini disk hubs with Mini Steering arms, not the Metro hubs with the Mini steering arms fitted. IIRC the geometry is different and the ball joint tapers are metric.
As for CV's you can use either but I think the Metro ones are more robust.

Yes mate you will need Metro drive flanges.
There are some wheels that they will not fit under, all you can do is try them..

Could somebody explain why metro flanges are required for this conversion. What happens if you bolt metro discs to mini flanges (on a mini that already has the standard disc brakes). Are the bolts between the discs and flanges different sizes - or does the disc not end up in the centre of the caliper?

the metro flange itself is a longer depth and pushes the disk out further, if you try the mini flange then the disks will lock up on the hub when bolted up, also to test it out took a long time because the mini flanges required the bolt holes to be widened.
Personally basher i would get a unmodded pair of calipers, i have a friend that has his under 10's but with the castings of the calipers being rough he went through 2 pairs of calipers before he got it right. Chances are the walls on your calipers are now wafer thin. If you want 4 pot calipers and saftey under the 10's save for some nice alloy calipers instead

I have modified Metro calipers to fit under 10" wheels, the task if done correctly (and its still a botdge) is to heat treat the casting and fill the fixing holes with weld using a special alloy steel rod material, then the caliper body will need to be re heat treated to get the silicon to disperse from the welded area, then the machining starts, for this I use a Hurco CNC milling machine with various tools.
Once done I have them crack tested and 1 set in every 10 gets destructive testing, Charpy test mainly and is compared against a standard off the shelf body.
These can be used with disc sizes of upto 8.25"
The cost for all of this makes it expensive but still cheaper than the Alluminium versions on the market.
I have quite a few customers that have been very happy with the results.
However I hasten to add, I will not be modifying anymore as it was going to add a further £10k to my insurance premium :-(
Although if you want serious brakes talk to Martin (Roofless) on here or otherwise known as Sticky fingers he has one of my mega kits at 285mm under a 13" wheel

The Metro hubs will fit, you will have to use the early metro ball joint as the taper is the same size as the Mini ball joint, the mini steering arm MUST be used as well as adjustable bottom arms and tie bars, the Mini driveshafts that are currently fitted to your Mini will fit just fine.
I personally do not recomend using them, however if fitted correclty they can be ok.
When using Mini hubs....
Use the the correct special bolt, modifying a metric bolt to do the job may well result in further cost, ie when you hit the car in front, brick wall or pedestrians etc..... it's just NOT worth scrimping on a few ££ when you weigh up the possibilities, these bolts are stocked by Mini Spares Centre and are pretty cheap.
