Is the Lambda sensor connected up properly or has it been knocked?
Have you tried just resetting the ECU?
Check the connections to all the sensors and injection parts and all the vacuum lines. It should look after itself though so basically it probably needs a new cat or lambda.
Can you read the fault codes?

I think woody means that it has a cat, but he doesn't want to have to buy a new one. This car's for sale remember, it would be very naughty to sell it without a cat fitted. Especially since he's in the motor trade.

Have you checked the cold start system Woody? If it's stuck in cold start that would make it over rich. How's the coolant gauge working? I can't remember if the gauge and ECU share a sender on the SPi.

Injector cleaner and a bit of a thrash , Mmm i could manage that !
the tickover is nice so i dont think the cold start is stuck
i thought there may be a burned out exhast valve allowing unburned fuel through
a compression test should tell me this .
shame there is no mixture screw on fuel injection !
