I think the goldseal engine is a factory re-con. I have one in my garage and it is actually gold in colour on the clutch housing ang gearbox. I know this engine is definatly a re-con.
Can anyone confirm?
p.s looks good miniman5.

It is my understanding that there were two levels of "rebuilt" parts available from the factory, Gold Seal and Silver Seal. These were rebuilds of major items such as engines and transmissions. I don't know what (process wise) distinguishes a Gold Seal from a Silver Seal.
by the way, you did a nice job on cleaning and reorganizing that engine compartment. It looks great.

What makes you say your engine's a replacement?
Replacement A-Plus 998s have numbers starting BHM or LBB. But by the time the A-Plus came along they had done away with the Gold or Silver designation and all replacements were to the same standard.

Just because it is painted yellow does not mean it is a gold seal ( which is basically an exchange(rebuilt) engine supplied by Austin Rover (or BMC) , a silver seal is a short engine ( ie less head, G/box and ancilliaries ).
Typically a gold or silver seal engine will have an 8G engine number.

Recon A Plus 998's don't have 8G engine numbers. Lots of Goldseal engines do, but not all. Recon A Plus 998 engine numbers start BHM or LBB
Gold/Silverseals also start GSE, RKM, BHM or 38G.

you learn something new every day, however, you can be sure that if the engines not a 9H or 12H then its defintely not the original Mini engine, unless you car pre-dates 1970. That's a whole different kettle of fish... !
