tried with my multimeter and it doesn't read anything???
So i need 170ohms in series then? or I take it 340ohms resistors in parrallel?

yep thats it.

if the gauge needs to see 170 ohms then as long as when you measure the resistance across the 2 terminals then bobs your uncle

You need 170 ohms accross the terminals, whether thats made up from other resistors (in parallel or series) or just one, it needs to be accross the terminals (as in parallel with the sender as it is a resistor).

Als not working. well he is but he's exterminating his adopted pet worms.

Looking good there Al, hope its gonna be able to catch my lil 998 ;D

Maybe itll make it to german next year?? we can paint it red and put a yellow badge on it and draw a horse with huge balls on the badge!

or not!

I think that would be bad luck.

I understand now that I need to put the resistors in series but...
I'm also a bit confused in general about the theory behind this.
ED4ran has got a 260ohms (empty) sender and has used about 160 ohms of resistors to get it to the required 100ohms.
My sender (now turned upside down) is 240ohms (empty) wouldn't I need 140ohms resistors and not the 170ohms thats been suggested?

yep i agree.

if you need 100 ohms and you have 240ohms then you will need 140 ohms worth of resistors.

no because that would be adding were you want to reduce it by 140, you do this by putting it in parallel with the sender. You need 170 in parallel with the sender to reduce the resistance to the range required. HOWEVER, you can make that 170 Ohms up which ever way you like be it with resistors in series, parallel or just 1 resistor of that value.

The fact that we used approximatly 160 ohms to get a reduction of 160 is a coincidence.

right i understand the 170 ohm thing now. so yeah they need to be put in parallel like Ed says

I'm glad you understand bo because I don't understand how it's worked out at 170 at all, I'm pretty cluesless with componenets, but I do inderstand what I need to do now, make 170 either in one resistor or by putting numerous resistors, with a total value of 170 in series and then put that 170 across (parrallel to) the terminals.

Any one got a spare 170ohms resistor? because with the ones I've got (100, 40 and 3x10s) I'll end up with 5 in a row!!!
and that'll look poo.
-I'll give you 50p for it :-

Use a 1k2 and a 200Ohm in parallel to get 171Ohms.

Maplin:-
200Ohm = 13p
1K2 = 13p

If you were wondering why I hadn't done anything lately it's because I was building the 1380 up ready for sale.
It looks good I think you'll agree.

the head was stripped and my friend stuck it in the cleaning tank at his work. It was painted with the same as the engine and re-built. I'm really proud of it it looks brand new!
