similar, slightly stronger but my main concerns would be the balance and the strength of the weld!! definate arc weld in my books!! dont think mig would have the penetration to make it strong enuf!!

It depends on the "amps" rating of the welder , if sleved shafts are done properly they only require glue or tack welding , welds too deep into the driveshaft will weaken the shaft
from what i have read you turn down the biggest shaft to the diameter of the thinnest then you mill a step half way into each about 25mm long , a sleve is made so both ends press fit in using heat (they overlap inthe middle) this can be held with engineering glue or tack welded and is strong enuf for 200BHP
sorry if this explanation does nt make sense , a better one can be found on the 16v forum

that does make sense!!

i think this is roughtly corect but i was referring to arc welding because mig melts the metals together thus giving you a thin spot across the weld!! arc and tig dont!! that add material to bridge the gap.

it makes sense that they would be press fit!! when u mentioned sleved i immediately thought BODGE but now you say you're doing it properly with interferance fit im sure thats guna be more than strong enuf!!

I think you'll find mig adds material as well!!! It just comes through the torch (its the welding wire!!).

sorry i know mig adds material too but as far as i was aware it was purely to get things going, more like a conductor that helps get the original metal flowing!!

quick update..

its been in and out like the okie kokie, frame is now on its 3rd generation, first temp shafts for sizing have been cobbled and it goes back in next week for final trail with everything in, Shafts, tiebars, wheels, brakes the lot to check for catching and clearance, this will get pushed about and checked running lock to lock etc.

if all well.. new shafts will be send off to be made, and i will get it bolted in, front mounted and will start on wiring and exhaust... leaving the plumbing till last..
