I have never used photoshop before, so i sat down today and tried to get the just of things without reading the book

here's what i did

excellent, try manually going round the shell with the cropping tool to create a new layer, then cut out all the bits you dont want to change the colour of like chrome etc, then mess with hue/saturation etc and you can get the colours looking real :D

Cheers retro, But where is the manual crop tool, I have been using the magic wand tool and clicking grow but its awkward.

Are you actually using Photoshop or are you using something else like Paint Shop Pro?
